http://walterbecker.com The half of Steely Dan that I feel doesn’t get enough accolades. Without Walter Becker there would be no Steely Dan. So I salute him in my post and document my appreciation for all the hours of great music I have smiled about. I have loved this band since I saw them perform on TV as a young kid. “Reeling in the Years” was on the “Midnight Special” on Friday night in my neighborhood long before cable was invented. I have put a lot of gas in Steely Dan’s tank. I am not even sure how many copies of their music I have but lets just say I have all the analog and digital copies of everything they have ever recorded. That includes the Original Master Recordings and the recent Pono high resolution copies. I have always used their music to try out high end audio gear all the way back to the late 1970’s. The fidelity is outstanding even when they play live.
Thanks to Donald and Walter for putting together some awesome studio and touring bands to keep us happy. Here is the only example I could find of a part of a live Steely Dan show I never tire of. I really enjoy listening to Walter rap on “Hey Nineteen.” It is funny to listen to his impromptu lines from the stage. In fact I always smile when I get to this part in a show…Thanks Walter.
Way back when
In Sixty-seven
I was the dandy
Of Gamma Chi
Sweet things from Boston
So young and willing
Moved down to Scarsdale
Where the hell am I
Hey Nineteen
No we can’t dance together
No we can’t talk at all
Please take me along
When you slide on down
Hey Nineteen
That’s ‘Retha Franklin
She don’t remember
The Queen of Soul
It’s hard times befallen
The sole survivors
She thinks I’m crazy
But I’m just growing old
Hey Nineteen
No we got nothing in common
No we can’t talk at all
Please take me along
When you slide on down
The Cuervo Gold
The fine Colombian
Make tonight a wonderful thing
No we can’t dance together
No we can’t talk at all
