“Let it Rain”

I just was listening to this resurrected and updated track yesterday in the bright sunlit North Carolina late winter day. As I rode down the highway I turned this up in my Land Cruiser and I was thinking about the first time I heard this song. I remember how I thought this song was a stand-out in that day. I used the word “resurrected” above as I thought this song had found it’s way to the vault. Not yet. Thankfully.

My 45 RPM of “Let it Rain” as a 1972 release. I never bought anything back then unless I loved the track. I was very young, money was scarce then, and only the best records could be collected. This was one of them. The label lists all the credits. This is one fabulous track and I still have it.
Pandemic tracks October 2020. This is a moment in history as many are. The Doobie Brothers join Peter Frampton with a cover of “Let it Rain.” This version and video is incredible.

The rain is falling through the mist
Of sorrow that surrounded me
The sun could never thaw away
The bliss that lays around me

Let it rain, let it rain
Let your love rain down on me
Let it rain, let it rain
Let it rain, rain, rain

Her life was like a desert flower
Burning in the sun
Until I found the way to love
It’s harder said than done

Now I know the secret
There is nothing that I lack
If I give my love to you
You’ll surely give it back

Tom Johnston and Pat Simmons on guitar. John McFee is on pedal steel and on keyboards from Little Feat and the Doobie Brothers is Bill Payne on piano. John Cowan is on bass, and Ed Toth on drums. Rob Arthur who did all the video work and played B3. The cool thing is I have done stage work with all of these players and enjoy watching their talent.

The guitar tones from the video are very nice. The keyboards are exceptional and the vocals are very good. This version is as great as the original. Keep on rocking people. This one needs to be cranked to “11.”
