The Gregg Allman Band Live!

Well. I could write a few thoughts. Or I could just ask you to listen to a song and think about the live music experience. The Allman Bothers Band wrote this song “Hot Lanta”…aka Atlanta. The song came about in 1971. I was listening then. I was a huge fan from a very young age. Southern rock and blues was and still is my thing. “Hot Lanta” evolved out of a jam session when Allman Brothers guitarist Dickey Betts got the idea for the melody line. This was a feature song at concerts for bass player Berry Oakley until his death in a motorcycle accident in 1972.
Hot ‘Lanta is also the name that Duane Allman gave his 1958 Darkburst Les Paul, which he used for his guitar parts on Eric Clapton’s “Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs.”

When I heard this song played recently as I have already written…I loved the original tune of the band. It was awesome. I am an audiophile and listen to all kinds of recordings but here is NOTHING like LIVE music. There never will be.

Until next time, I’ll see you, down the road.

I saw Gregg Allman several times right before he passed away. This photo was taken at the Cone Denim Entertainment Center on Elm Street in Greensboro. Gregg had his New Orleans Saints shirt on and I watched the show standing from less than four feet away the entire night. I had a VIP seat and never sat in it.
Scott Sharrard did an awesome job as band director for the Gregg Allman Band during his final tours. His guitar tone was spot on for the tone of the original recordings and live performances.
