This is a guy I could write about for a long time. On this occasion as I sat about 8 feet from him I shot two photos only. There were several reasons I did not raise my camera more than twice. The music was stunning and the room was full but completely silent. I believe everyone in the room knew what they were seeing was special and there was a whole lot of respect going around for this artist on this night. I really don’t want to add a history project to these notes but I do remember the first time I saw David perform in Jackson, Mississippi with Jackson Browne. It was the late 1970’s and Jackson was touring his “Running on Empty” album. He had David playing on the stage in a chair and he brought the house down with his vocal on “Stay.” The album is great but the live show was one to remember.
David has been on stage with many of my favorite artists over the years from Bonnie Raitt to Warren Zevon. Warren was one of those artists that I have passed through many decades with his music playing to my life track. I can remember sitting at Trader Vics in Memphis back in the late 1970’s and hearing “Werwolves of London” when it was a brand new tune and was all the rage on FM radio. I remember the months before his death when I produced a tribute show to his legacy for Radiomargaritaville. Warren was a real music gift to many of us.
It was indeed a pleasure to see David in a small venue after all these years. Here is a video of a favorite Warren Zevon song David did for Warren and us on that night. It is a great one…”Mutineer.”
Stay!
