Turntable Tuesday! Boston’s debut album “Boston”

It’s Turntable Tuesday because life is too short not to listen to great music! This week on Turntable Tuesday I am opening a new picture disc version of the 180 gram vinyl pressing of Boston’s first album. Every song on this album is still in constant rotation of classic rock stations around the world decades after their release.

I hope you are staying warm in your location as winter is totally in full swing north of the equator with snow still outside the studio as I write this! Crank up your music device, enjoy vinyl, or get out there and support your favorite live band! Stay safe! What are YOU listening to right now?

It’s what’s on the number 3 piano stool this week. The picture disc version of the self-titled debut album from “Boston.”

The back cover of the album still in the shrink wrap. There is a clear plastic sleeve inside but the wrap was left on this copy to help protect the cover as it ages. This is a brand new 180 gram version from my collection that shares a shelf with my 1976 first pressing.
The track list from the cover
A sticker noting the 40th anniversary of the album release.

Another Tom Scholz photo. Boston has toured almost continuously for many years. Even though Brad Delp is not with us to provide lead vocals and the band is different in the live setting the band sounds great on stage and is exciting to hear as they belt out the classic rock masterpieces. At this show I was very close to the stage and right behind the family of Tommy DeCarlo (Charlotte, North Carolina) who has toured with Boston since 2008. He does a great job on stage.
I mentioned this video on my podcast as it really captures some of the tools Tom invented and used to build his musical creations. I really like people like this that are smart and creative. Tom is a special talent indeed.

Tom Scholz. I have previously told the story of going to buy the first Boston album but I like to think of this moment as it reminds me of so many details for some reason. That tiny moment in time where something special happens that you remember. I have such a huge music collection now I can barely tell you what I have in my collection not mention the details of where a majority of it even came from. I remember riding in a car over to the record store on an almost one hour road trip to buy this album.

I do remember walking into a record store getting a copy of the album that FM rock radio was continuously playing on air. I remember the album was in a very dark green paper bag with a brown inside liner that was fitted to the album size as I walked out the door. There were no credit cards baack then and I paid cash for this record. I don’t remember where the store was other than it was in Meridian, Mississippi but it was a vinyl shop of the American bi-centennial year 1976. I was 17 years old. I had just returned from North Carolina where I had been working and saving a few dollars. School had just started again and I was headed into my senior year of high school.

When I arrived back home I put this album on my low end audio system and cranked it up. I had built the speakers myself and they were not bad for the day even being bass reflex designs with horns and bass ports. I had learned much of that craft from my friend who lived in the delta of Mississippi. He was a stellar guitar player who could play any instrument and could write an encyclopedia on electronics not to mention audio gear. He had built the Paul Klipsch initial folded horn design speakers and they were amazing. I was hooked on audiophile music reproduction then and even now.

Even though this album has sold over 20 million copies worldwide there is so much detail behind the scenes that I want share with you on the companion podcast. I really enjoy reading about the history of this band all of the work that went into making this amazing album. I want to share some stories and background on this album with you so be sure to check out the podcast for this episode.

Don’t forget to follow the podcast so you don’t miss a single episode! This project is a passion of mine and I hope you enjoy listening and reading about this awesome music! If you don’t have this vinyl go get a copy, if you have a copy go get it out! Sit down and listen to this album. It will rock you.

Until next time I’ll see you, down the road.
