From Paris 1979.

June, 1979. I have memories of the music of the band “Supertramp” filling the airwaves of my North Carolina based Pioneer “Supertuner” in my car. In that era which seems so long ago it was a common practice to install these rather large AM/FM radio tuners with a cassette player under your dash as they rarely fit the dash opening if they had a design that ignored the normally non-standard holes in a dash for a radio. In this particular car which was a 1970’s Toyota Corolla I had the six by nine inch speakers mounted in the rear deck and that was no easy feat given the small space back behind the seat in that car. For the most part new music in this time period would come to you mostly on an FM tuner or if you visited the record store you could possibly discover a new artist or a new album that would convince you to buy the vinyl and head home. Supertramp was one of those bands that just exploded on to the playlists of all the top rock stations in 1979 and honestly being an avid listener of radio it was only a week or two before I could hardly stand to hear a song from this record. It’s not that the music is bad or I dislike the artist it is just that I do not like to hear any artist or band over and over. I am very analytical when I listen to music and soon I just want to move on to the next project or even a different genre to keep it interesting. Supertramp was one of those bands that literally took over on FM playlists and for me I would change the channel when their songs came on the radio in 1979. These days I own the Mo-fi origional master recording 180 gram version of the vinyl and of course I can stream the music on demand if I care to crank up a tune from the album.

This is a nice collection of songs and there are multiple hits on this record. Many who lived in this era will tell you these songs bring back many companion memories as they hear the music play. I can relate to that thought as I do remember the time period very well and all the things that were happening in my life then. Most everyone can relate specific music to certain events in their life and this band certainly owned 1979 on the FM dial. It is hard to mention that specific year in music without mentioning “Breakfast in America.”

I’ll walk through additional background on this album with the track list one by one. I will tell you all about the players in this band during the companion podcast episode. Tune in and Give it a listen! My podcast is growing each week so thank you all for your support! I hope you and yours have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Until next time I’ll see you, down the road.
