This album just arrived on my doorstep a couple of weeks back as the 2020 reissue started shipping. As the shrink wrap sticker says below this limited edition red 180 gram vinyl was recorded live on December 15, 1988 at the Hollywood Palladium. The first release of this album was on December 10, 1991 in America and later in February of 1992 for the UK.

A sticker from the shrink wrap that describes some of the detail of this two vinyl set.

“The X-Pensive Winos” are: Keith Richards, Steve Jordan, Ivan Neville, Charley Drayton, Waddy Wachtel, Sarah Dash, and Bobby Keys. For the uninitiated Steve Jordan is a co-writer of many of the songs and a drummer who finds his way from New York to LA playing in bands and all over TV. Ivan Neville is part of the New Orleans family with his own band called “Dumpstafunk.” Charley Drayton is a bass player extraordinaire and one “Keef” calls his favorite bass player. Waddy Wachtel is the guitar guy who has played on all kinds of records from Warren Zevon to Jackson Browne. Waddy just released a new cd EP from a band they call “The Immediate Family” that you should check out. The soul singer who surrounds herself with names you can drop aka Sarah Dash lays down some serious vocals on several tracks on this record. Sarah had just worked on the Rolling Stones album “Steel Wheels” as this Palladium concert was recorded in 1988 and boy do I remember that “Steel Wheels” tour!

One of my photos from 2016. Waddy Wachtel rocking on stage!

The first track from the record opens with the crowd roaring and Keith playing “Take it Too Hard.” By the end of the song Keith mentions he is on a stage he had been thrown off many times” which was a reference to a time back in 1972 when Chuck Berry supposedly kicked him off stage for playing too loud!

The gatefold opens to a large photo of Keith playing one of his Fender Telecasters.
The back of the album with the track listing. The band is having a good time in this photo Keith just shared this photo on his Facebook page a couple of days back.
Here are a few liner notes mentioning that this is a remastered pressing. There are three packages available in limited supply and this is just the vinyl package.
“Live at the Hollywood Palladium” Here is the You Tube stream released last month that runs just over one hour. As the graphic from Keith says at the end of the video “Thanks to all the bootleggers who made this necessary.”

This is a nice collector piece for anyone who is a fan of Keith Richards or the Rolling Stones. The songs are well written and the musicians are top shelf. Go try this one out before the limited editions sell out. They will not last on the shelf for long and then you will be looking for a used copy.

Until next time I’ll see you, down the road.
